What should I do with Ipod Touch 2nd gen stuck 4.2.1?

Some of us might experience this, for those who have ipod touch 2nd gen which happened to be stuck at 4.2.1 firmware, which sucks. This got me thinking should I buy an apple? The experience using apple is exciting but if time goes by, do we have to upgrade our hardware as well?
